Let’s Move!

February 9, 2010

The First Lady is the latest in a growing number of individuals who realize that America’s eating and exercising habits are no longer sustainable, and must change.

This morning, Michelle Obama officially launched her new initiative to combat childhood obesity. Let’s Move! is a four-pronged, nationwide movement to make our children healthier, focusing on increasing accessibility of healthy food information for parents, improving the quality of school food, increasing access and affordability of healthy foods to families everywhere, and renewing our focus on physical education.

In addition to Let’s Move!, the First Lady is heading a partnership of nonprofit and private organizations to further her efforts. The Partnership for a Healthier America will support broad-based efforts to reduce the occurrence of childhood obesity in the United States. Founding members include The California Endowment, Kaiser Permanente, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, a collaboration between the Clinton Foundation and the American Heart Association.

Specifics about Let’s Move! and the Partnership’s plans are still fuzzy; the two websites were just launched today. However, bringing such high-profile attention to the importance of feeding our children well and exercising regularly is a good place to start, and promises great things to come.
