New Labels, Same Logic

January 25, 2011

In response to the FDA’s call for voluntary, front-of-package food labeling, the food industry is rolling out a new set of labels in the next few months that will notify consumers about the calorie, fat, and sugar content of the food inside, among other nutrients. According to the New York Times, the labels have been criticized for also listing the content of “beneficial” nutrients, like vitamins and protein, which may mislead consumers and encourage manufacturers to further fortify their foods. Yet what’s missed in the discussion is the need for further research to demonstrate that consumers actually understand the information on food labels and use them to make smarter choices.
